Members of California’s Armenian Legislative Caucus visited the Western Diocese on Thursday, October 18, 2018. The esteemed guests, members of the State Legislature accompanied by the State Assemblymembers were led to the Hampar Family Room of the Western Diocese where they were welcomed by the Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. In his welcoming remarks, His Eminence commended members of California’s Armenian Legislative Caucus for the wonderful initiative of introducing their colleagues to the Armenian-American community.
Accompanying the members of the Armenian Legislative Caucus were His Excellency Mr. Armen Baibourtian, Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles, and Professor Richard Hovannisian. Armenian American historian and professor emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles. Joseph Kanimian, Esq., Chairman of the Diocesan Council was also present.
Archbishop Derderian spoke about the establishment of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of North, its rich history and its collaboration with other institutions.
The guests were first led on a tour of the Zorayan Museum where a number of historic artifacts were on display and later, the sanctuary of St. Leon (Srbots Ghevontiants) Armenian Cathedral where they learned about the history of the Armenian Church and the unique Armenian architectural style.
In his closing remarks, the Primate expressed his keen desire to further strengthen the Diocese-Sacramento relationship.
