The morning of April 24, 2019 was a somber, yet a hopeful and positive day. A genocide memorial service took place on the campus of Scottsdale Community College (SCC) in Arizona, at the Genocide Monument in the center of the school grounds. The monument itself commemorates all Genocide and Holocaust Martyrs and was presented to the SCC by St. Apkar Armenian Apostolic Church and the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church.

The event included uplifting and heartfelt messages and prayers, all related to the topic of genocide, as well as musical performances. Two of St. Apkar’s very own performed including violinist Mr. Levon Zarasian and flutist Miss Diana Tovmosian.

Local clergy from various religious denominations and local dignitaries participated in the event including US Congressman David Schweikert and the Honorable Mayor Jim Lane, who presented Rev. Fr. Zacharia Saribekyan with a Proclamation recognizing the day as Armenian Martyrs’ Day.

At the conclusion of the program, attendees lined up and placed flowers on and around the genocide monument.
