In 1969, while taking his first steps on the moon, US astronaut Neil Armstrong proclaimed one of the most captivating phrases in human history "That's one small step for man... one giant leap for mankind." Today, echoing the same sentiment of the beloved American astronaut, the United States House of Representatives passed House Resolution 296 with an overwhelming majority to recognize the Armenian Genocide. It is a giant leap in the global recognition of the Armenian Genocide, an irrefutable fact in the annals of the 20th century. Historical truths cannot be concealed or altered. They cannot be denied. Furthermore, the cries of a people risen from the ashes of genocide cannot be silenced.Â
Today, the members of the House of Representatives heard the cries of the 1.5 million martyred saints and paid due respect to the horrific recollections of Ambassador Henry Morgenthau who wrote "When the Turkish authorities gave the orders for these deportations, they were merely giving the death warrant to a whole race they understood this well, and, in their conversations with me, they made no particular attempt to conceal the fact."Â
This historic resolution sets the record straight. The bipartisan effort by the members of the House of Representatives to recognize the Armenian Genocide as the first genocide of the 20th century is truly commendable as it pursues the most noble cause of justice.Â
May the Good Lord bless and protect those who uphold justice.
May God bless and protect the United States of America.
