We learned from official media outlets about the escalating tensions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, which began on July 12 as a result of Azerbaijan’s large-scale premeditated diversionary attack. The military strike on the bordering residential areas in the province of Tavush was brought to an abrupt halt by the brave soldiers of the Armenian Armed Forces.
Even at this moment, our victorious army continues to carry out its noble mission of protecting the borders of our Motherland Armenia and Artsakh. As had been stated by Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia is ready to fully eradicate all diversionary attacks and launch an equaled counteroffensive strike.
It is worrisome that in a time of a global pandemic, the belligerent Azeri military has demonstrated the sheer lack of farsightedness and has failed to fully comprehend the implications of its actions.
We vehemently condemn the official statement issued by the genocidal Turkish government, distorting all factual evidence, and placing the burden of responsibility of the attacks on the Republic of Armenia.
The government of Turkey, which recently converted Hagia Sophia, an international cultural jewel inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List into a mosque, ought to reconcile with its dark and bloody past prior to expressing full-fledged support to Azerbaijan, the aggressor.
We call upon the international community as well as all allies of Armenia to refrain from adopting a passive stance and strictly condemn the territorial encroachments made by Azerbaijan.
To our beloved compatriots, we wish determination, strength and unity. As the chosen people of God, we ought to be always vigilant to protect our one and only Motherland Armenia, the biblical land of Ararat, even at the price of martyrdom.
We uplift our prayers to the Almighty God for the souls of our martyred heroes who sacrificed their lives in defending Motherland Armenia. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May they find comfort in the Holy Spirit. We also wish speedy recovery to the wounded.
Remain steadfast in prayer for peace and victory to transform your prayers into concrete actions, should the need arise.
May the holy cross of King Ashot II Yerkat safeguard us all. Amen.
Prayerfully,
Archbishop Hovnan Derderian
Primate
