Arguably the most important objective for k-12 education is to prepare students with equipping them with the foundational academic skills to matriculate into college or university. All school-related tasks have eventually one outcome in view and that is to situate the student in the best possible academic standing to be a competitive candidate when they are applying for college. The academic professional whose direct role is to guide and advise parents and students in this most important process is the school counselor. School counselors are the professionals on a school site that are charged with addressing the social, emotional, academic, and college-going needs of students and families.
Given the current state of schools, there are on average only one counselor assigned to every 400 students at a given public high school in the state of California. The numbers are a little better at private schools; however, even at private schools many students and families are considerably uninformed, under-informed, and ill-informed when it comes to understanding the intricacies that are involved in navigating the college admissions process. Preparing for admissions to a university has many components such as taking the right number of courses at the proper levels of rigor (AP and honors classes), having strong scores in college entrance standardized exams such as the SAT and the ACT, and participating in the proper extracurricular activities that enhance and highlight the student’s strengths, interests, and passions.
Since March of 2020, there is now another level of challenge that is further frustrating and exasperating parents of both k-12 and community college students. With the COVID pandemic and the physical closure of schools, students and parents have become further detached from their already meager access to on-site counselors. With schools having shifted to 100% online, families are feeling overwhelmed because of their inability to communicate as readily as before with their student’s counselor. Similarly, on the school side, counselors have to battle the obstacle of scheduling, availability, and technology to reach families (which is unfortunately unsuccessful most of the time). This has exacerbated the already existing challenges and made it even harder to get effective and timely college counseling.
Being a college consultant for over 15 years and noticing the frustration that countless families faced over the years when it came to receiving quality college guidance, I decided to officially launch EduProsUSA College Consulting and Tutorial Services in 2016--an independent college and tutorial services company based in Glendale, CA. Our mission is to assist families in devising and customizing an educational plan that is in accordance with the unique gifts and talents their students possess. Our unique calling as a company is to infuse motivation and passion into students by helping them uncover their unique abilities. We prefer to meet students earlier on in their academic journeys (usually when they’re in middle school or late elementary) and help them reflect on their experiences and performance in school and come up with some tentative ideas of majors and careers where they can do well in the future. When a student has a preliminary idea of their natural leanings and inclinations both in terms of their academics and extracurricular activities, they are automatically more motivated and perform better in school.
We want parents to know that EduProsUSA College Consulting and Tutorial Services is available to meet all of their college admissions and advising and tutorial needs should they want supplemental guidance beyond what their home institutions are capable of providing. For families that are homeschooling their students, we come in even more handy as students do not have direct access to a college counselor provided for by the charter program or school that they’re affiliated with.
