Primate's Memorial Day Message

Memorial Day unofficially marks the start of the summer season. Grocery stores and home improvement stores alike aim to attract potential buyers by advertising deep discounts on an array of products ranging from hamburger patties to barbecue grills in their mailers. The mass media persuades us to celebrate the summer season by taking advantage of such offers. It is when we take advantage of the long weekend to plan mini vacations.

Travel plans for well-deserved long weekends are great. However, how many of us truly take the time to contemplate on the solemnity of Memorial Day? How many of us pay homage to the fallen soldiers who paid the ultimate price of sacrificing their lives for freedom? Not many enough.

On this Memorial Day, let us change our mindset. Let us attend War Memorial monuments and pay our due respect to the brave souls who perished leaving behind an undying legacy of their courage. On Memorial Day, let us also pray for God’s peace to reign supreme on Earth. Amen.

Archbishop Hovnan Derderian
Primate
