“It is more blessed to give than to receive” - Acts 20:35
If you are active on social media, you probably came across David Carmi’s videos on his page called @confidenceheist. One of those videos showed up on my IG feed the other day. In it, a middle-aged man from Brooklyn named Steven, also known as @2dollorhollar, shares a simple life truth that resonated with me.
“Every day is a struggle. When you see people on Instagram living their best life, having the best time, being on beaches and traveling—that's not real life. Real life is what we all go through every day. Everyone has stuff they carry with them. Everyone has trauma, everyone has issues. To me, it's an obligation to try and make the world a better place. I do it like this: I give you three $2 bills. One is for you—for health and wealth. The other two are for you to give to somebody else in life. Why? Because giving is twice as good as receiving. You give these to someone else, and you get to feel what it's like to give. I believe that giving is living. I've done that for 20 years with everybody I've met. And I think that is my purpose. Just be a good person. Be kind. Spread love,” concludes Steven.
Yesterday, while I was watching the news—with all the negativity going on locally and globally—Steven’s wisdom about the joy of giving came to mind. If only we could realize that giving is twice as good as receiving, and that giving is living, even our worst day could be transformed into something meaningful. The secret to a better world is not found in what we get, but in what we give. And when giving becomes part of our culture, the world becomes a safer and better place to live.
Therefore, let us heed the words of the Apostle and learn the joy of giving, the sweetness of serving, and the blessing of making life better for one another.
