Another blessed day was dedicated to the memory of the great Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911–2000), one of the most prolific and visionary musicians of the 20th century. With a catalog of more than 500 works, Hovhaness uniquely wove together Armenian spiritual traditions, Eastern melodies, and Western classical music. His compositions, performed on world stages ranging from Carnegie Hall to the temples of India, continue to inspire listeners through their meditative depth and timeless beauty.

On Monday, September 29, the Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, accompanied by Archpriest Fr. Vazgen Boyajyan and Karina Stepanyants, a parishioner of Holy Resurrection Armenian Church of Seattle, visited the late composer’s home. The visit was marked by a special “home blessing service,” during which Archbishop Derderian reflected on the enduring spiritual and cultural contributions of Hovhaness. Deeply moved by the manuscripts and memories preserved in the home, the Archbishop noted Hovhaness’s profound spiritual bond with significant Armenian figures, most notably Khrimian Hayrik, the beloved father figure of the Armenian Church.

The composer’s stepson William, together with his wife Coleen, will continue to carry forward this legacy. Next month, they will travel to Arlington, Massachusetts, for the blessing of a book about Alan Hovhaness written by his mother, before bringing the same celebration to Los Angeles. Plans are also underway for a special commemoration in the Western Diocese, anticipated either later this year or early next year.

In Seattle, additional initiatives are taking shape in collaboration with King FM, including a book blessing and a concert dedicated to Hovhaness’s music. These efforts promise to keep alive the spirit of a composer whose works continue to uplift hearts and souls around the world.
