Since early childhood, I had been immersed in the world of sports. Sports was a way of life, an emotional disconnect, an escape one might say, from the harsh reality. My father had a great influence in my upbringing, for he was a talented and decorated multi-sport athlete ranging from combat sports such as boxing and wrestling to team sports such as soccer and field hockey. Along with my dad, I have watched legendary athletes compete at every Olympics (Summer and Winter Olympiads) since the Seoul Games of 1988. I remember my father explaining to me the significance of the Olympics in promoting world peace. His words still echo in my ears to this day. “Sergey jan, the five interlaced rings of the Olympiad represent the five continents whose people come together to compete under one unifying flag. They (rings) interlace to demonstrate the commonalities between the people. Essentially, the Olympics are a symbol of peace.”
