Very Rev. Fr. Pakrad Berjekian along with the Parish Council and Trust Committee of St. John Garabed Armenian Church of San Diego are pleased to announce that an anonymous benefactor has donated four acres of land in Del Mar, California to the Trust Committee. The parcel has an appraised value of $2,880,000 and sits adjacent to 14 acres of entitled land where the parish is building a new church and campus. The donor has indicated his wishes to see an assisted living facility established on this property to provide a source of income to help sustain the operation of the church and campus.
When completed, the site will feature a sanctuary designed to resemble St. Hripsime in Etchmiadzin, elegant social hall, youth center and gymnasium, education and cultural building with classrooms and a library, Armenian Heritage Park, picnic and meditation spaces, and abundant parking. Situated less than a mile from the ocean and just east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, this valuable land, which with this recent donation totals 18 acres, promises to become the jewel of the Western Diocese and a destination for Armenians worldwide.
Jim Sahagian, chairman of the Building Committee stated, “The donation of the adjacent four acres of land is an enormous boost to the value of the property owned by St. John Garabed. If it’s possible to obtain a Conditional Use Permit for the assisted living facility, and then construct this facility right next to the campus, we will have realized our dream of building a Bridge to the Future in San Diego.”
